- SMRT-1 (Smart One) was a small, purple robot at located in Computer
Central, where you could take a look "behind the scenes" at the
computers which ran Epcot. Located on a revolving pedestal surrounded by
telephones, he would challenge guests with trivia questions (kind of like what
I'm doing now...) and would occasionally sing and tell jokes (many of them
quite bad). Visitors could compete against one another by speaking their
answers into the phones surrounding the pedestal.
-
SMRT-1 avoided the scrap heap when Computer Central and Communicore closed, and
was seen for a while in the Grand Canyon Concourse of the Contemporary Resort
Hotel. He was converted to a radio controlled robot, and was operated by a
nearby Cast Member, who used controls and a microphone concealed in his coffee
mug to operate the little guy.
