When Walt Disney World opened in 1971, only the Grand Prix
Raceway and the Skyway to Fantasyland were the only attractions that were
operational in Tomorrowland.
-
America the Beautiful didn't open until more than one month
later on November 25, 1971. Flight to the Moon opened on December 24, 1971. On
June 5, 1972, If You Had Wings opened, and The Carousel of Progress was not
moved from Disneyland until September 9, 1973. Space Mountain and Star Jets
opened in 1974, with the WEDway Peoplemover following in 1975.
- Tomorrowland was originally designed to portray Disney's
view of the future. Unfortunately, a land about the future is one that needs
constant updating, so Disney decided that instead of trying to keep the land
with a constantly-changing, current view of the future, they decided to take a
look into the past first. Disney looked to the classic science fiction writers
and films of the 1920's and 1930's such as Jules Verne, and "Buck Rogers
in the 25th Century" for their view of the future. Heralded as "The
Future that Never Was," the "New" Tomorrowland opened in 1994
with updated attractions, as well as a new look to the entire land. Gone were
the stark white pillars and cold architecture. In its place were colorful,
futuristic "retro" icons adorned with metal, neon and glass.
- Jules Verne's ideas for future travel to the Moon were
featured in Horizons, where an Audio-Animatronic Jules could be seen inside his
padded rocket ship (along with his dog). Jules Verne was the author of such
classic works as "Around the World in 80 Days," and "Journey to
the Center of the Earth."
- As seen on signs and posters throughout Tomorrowland, the
newly renovated Tomorrowland, which opened in 1995, was billed as the
"Future that Never Was." Inspired by the visions of the future by
such writers as Jules Verne, and other sci-fi writers and moviemakers of the
20's and 30's, the new Tomorrowland claims that, "The Future That Never
Was Is Finally Here."
- Sonny Eclipse performs in Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe, and
is from Yew Nork City on the planet Zork. (Yensid is Disney spelled backwards)
He is a piano-playing alien, married to a gal that really "blows him
away" (with her many nostrils) and has the loveliest purple eyes! Sonny
plays hits such as "Yew Nork, Yew Nork" and the "Planetary
Boogie", and is backed up by his Space Angels (which you never actually
see). In between songs he tells some pretty bad jokes ("Hey! Did you hear
the universe is expanding? Guess it's time to loosen the asteroid belt!")
- According to the signs on the way from the Plaza Pavilion to
Tomorrowland, Leonard Burnedstar will be conducting the Martian Pops Orchestra
concert.
- Mickey's Mart, located in Tomorrowland, sold Disney
souvenirs and Coppertone sun care products since 1971. It closed on June 27,
1991 and is now known as Mickey's Star Traders.
- The renovated Tomorrowland opened in 1995 and was heralded
as the "Future that Never Was". Like its own futuristic city, the
Avenue of the Planets leads to the Rocket Tower Plaza, the Tomorrowland Transit
Authority provides transportation, and there's even a Tomorrowland
Interplanetary Convention Center.
- If you're looking for somewhere to throw your garbage in
Tomorrowland, you may just find the moving and TALKING trash can! His name is
PUSH
- After the refurbishment in 1994 to become the "New Tomorrowland", Guests were meant to take on the role as visiting tourists to a galactic metropolitan city
