  •  On December 14, 2003, Disney's Pop Century Resort, the fourth of the Walt Disney World resorts' Value properties, opened near Disney's Animal Kingdom. The Resort takes a nostalgic trip through American pop culture, featuring larger than life icons representing each decade of the 20th century. The first phase opened in December, and includes the 1950s to the 1990s. For more than a year, Disney Imagineers scoured antique shops and yard sales, and spent a lot of time on eBay looking for treasures from days gone by. Lobby walls are covered with shadowboxes displaying tons of artifacts that are sure to bring back fond memories. The 5,760-room resort features catch phrases on the guest room buildings from all the decades of the 20th century, like "Groovy" and "The Most!", as well as icons such as Mr. Potato Head and a giant Rubix Cube anchor the 1980s, a Mickey Mouse telephone and a Big Wheel in the 1970s section, Duncan Yo-Yos and Flower Power for the 1960s section, and jukeboxes and giant "45's" records for the 1950s section. (Do kids today even know what a record looks like?). Even the Cast Members' golf carts are designed to look like 57 Chevys, complete with tail fins. The Classic Hall Food Court has a variety of dining options, and dishes up "comfort food" including buttermilk fried chicken, mashed potatoes with gravy, and fresh green beans, served "TV Dinner Style."
