Marathon training

Well I have decided to get off my big backside and start training for the marathons I hope to be in shape for the '09 half marathon. Any tips for a first timer. I have already heard some of Scopa's advise on a few of the podcasts he has done lately. I just went to this awesome store here in Rochester called Fleet Feet. They Measured me, talked to me about the proper shoe and even video taped me running on a tread mill to see what kind of shoe would work the best. I think I have the proper shoes and clothing. Any other advise would be very helpful. Keep Dreaming.

I have done the full and half at WDW - my bggest advise is to take it slow.....even if you think you an go longer or faster in training don't. When I trained for the half I started out doing 1.5 miles and worked my way up to 11...I never did the 13.1 until the race.

This is the training shedule I followed if it will help

Monday - jog medium distance
Tuesday - Speed and hill work
Wednesday - Long Distance
Thursday - Crosstrain (swim)
Friday - jog med distane
Saturday - Long Distance or local 5k race
Sunday - Off

starting out with 1.1 miles. Just started offically running on Friday. Man I did not realize how out of shape I have let myself get. Because of where I live I have no other choice but to have hills (up and down) in my training. I will keep updating this post as to how I am doing.

You and I had the same idea! I have also started "training" for the '09 marathon for the first time. So far, I have lost 5lbs. Thanks Lou and Scopa!!!

Well my advice is to try to get a trainer at a gym. I was surprized how much didn't know about running a marathon. Once we paid for the trainer through the gym, we offered to pay her on the side for extra training sessions, which was a lot cheaper. Also, try entering 5k races when you can. They're not as long as the 1/2 marathon but they can be a great training experience. Most of all, stay positive and you'll be fine. Good luck.

keep posting. I would like to know how your trainging goes. I would actualy like to thank Jonathan Dichter. He has been the one to inspire me to attempt to do the same. I believe he said that he lost about 60 lbs. so far.

Will do! Let's keep each other updated . I have only been running (more like slow jogging)for about 2 weeks now so hopefully I'll be ready.
Also, thanks to Jonathan Dichter. I totally forgot about him!

P.S. Thanks for the Good Luck wishes Nicki!

Welll it's been 4 days into it and my soreness has gone down and I have lost 2 lbs. Starting today I will be increasing my distance to running(who am I kidding more like jogging) 1.1 miles then walking 1.1 miles. And thanks Nicki for the good luck wishes.

You're better off than I am. So far I'm walking 1 1/2 miles and slow jogging the other 1/2 mi. I'm hoping next week to increase my jogging to 2/3 mile.

I know I'm a looong way, but out of curiosity when do I need to start working on increasing speed? Right now I'm jogging slower than I walk (which is very funny, but I walk fast anyway).

I would suggest you increasing jogging speed when you are able to jog the whole 2 miles comfortably.
