I'm really glad this is starting in January. I'm going to Disney in December and Fantasmic is one of those things that i MUST DO every time I'm there, so it's good to know I can see it on any night.
I also could do without American Idol (personally I'm tired of it) but I'm indifferent about it being in Disney World. It's something that I can just ignore.

That's one thing I forgot to ask about. I thought Sorceror Mickey fought a Dragon during the show that came came out of the top mountain. When we saw Fantasmic the Dragon was projected on a screen of water
the same thing happened to me when i was there last july!! my brother and i were so confused and just stared at each other the entire time haha! we just assumed something was wrong with it or they were updating it........ im very dissapointed about this news especially since that means more people will be crowding to get into the show which means i have to get there earlier than usual!

And All Ears posted this today:

The Orlando Sentinel also reported that Disney will reduce
performances of "Fantasmic!" at Disney's Hollywood Studios to
just two nights a week, beginning in January. The finale of the
daily "American Idol" competition will take place in that park
toward the end of the day, although no other entertainment to
replace Fantasmic! has been announced. Magic Kingdom and Epcot
will continue to have 7-day nighttime spectaculars, "Wishes" and
the "Reflections of Earth" shows respectively.

And AP, I agree, I hope everyone goes to Idol, it should help with the rest of the lines and maybe it won't take two hours to get through Toy Story.

I'm wondering, maybe they are going to use the Fantasmic theater for the American Idol finale show??

Y'know I was thinking that same thing but I have no idea how they'd do that exactly. It's not really setup for something like that... at least not yet. Instead, I think the reasoning is to get people to attend the AI finally. If Fantasmic isn't showing or isn't showing until later, it stands to reason that people would hit the AI show at the end of a long tiring day of fun. I suppose only WDI knows for sure.

I first heard this on a podcast earlier this week and thought they were saying the change was that on the nights where it'd be shown twice, it'd now only be shown once... which confused me. So I'm glad I found this thread to clarify it for me.

I'm not really too heartbroken over Fantasmic! not showing as many shows. I mean; it's not that I don't like it, it's just not something I would run back to. Though I'm not too keen on The American Idol Experience either, but that's another story.

I like Fantasmic, but it's not my favorite closing show, so I'm not too terribly bummed out that they're cutting performances out, but I am surprised that they're cutting it back to two a week. I'm not an Idol fan, so I just won't see the show, and like someone else said, hopefully it'll makes the lines on rides I do like shorter.

So when you see something like that pop up and you just cannot stand it, think of it this way, it makes for shorter lines everywhere else and you won't have to deal with that many people that like those shows, because I'm sure you probably won't get along with them either as they sing pop songs and such while waiting in line, lol.
I never thought of it that way but that's how I'm gonna think about it from now on. I won't have to wait in as long lines at my favorite places.
