This just in. . .

Well, I just had a call from my personal Magic Kingdom source of information.

There was a meeting today and it was announced that Space Mountain would be shut down for 2 years! The building will be gutted and the attraction will be completely redone.

There were discussions about knocking the entire building down to redo the attraction so it would be like the SM in DL Paris, but the higher-ups were worried about complaints from WDW purists (like me, I suppose). My source did not have any info about whether or not the new SM would have a soundtrack like DL, but promises to keep me informed.

Yes, two years!

I seem to recall that Space Mountain at DL was closed about that long when they got it ready for the 50th celebration. The attraction was in such a state of disrepair that they had to break it completely down to do the refurb.

Wow! 2 Years!! That's a long time!

But I remember that the Space Mountain ride seemed really jerky, and it wasn't that dark inside.

It would be cool if the ride was pitch-black, so you couldn't see at all.. that would maybe give it a more space-like feel too it.

But I did like the music! I hope they don't change that! Though, I wouldn't complain if it was changed to a cool rock mix...

I am still preying that they wait for me to come out before they shut it down! I'll be mad if they shut it down before I get out there.

Holy whoa - 2 years!!!

I'm totally not opposed to the Disneyland Paris Space Mountain idea. It's supposed to be really cool. I do love the existing building, though - it's very distinct. Oh, I'm torn!

On mouseextra.com it is stated that minor refurbishments are to happen.
IDK i guess we'll have to see!! Hopefully, they won't change the music, but some new track or lighting would be cool

I heard 10 to 11 months. If it takes Disney 2 years to complete a single, or double rollercoasters with all the staff they have, or could hire. That's sad.

I don't usually quote myself, but I did some further research on DL's SM closing.

It closed April 10, 2003 and reopened July 15, 2005. However, work did not start immediately after it was closed. The attraction was initially closed because the track was in bad shape. During the track inspection it was determined that it was in such bad shape they had to remove all the existing track and replace it. So, the two year time frame is an estimate based on what transpired at DL.

i doublt it will be down for 2 years, yes disneyland took a while, but they learned a lot from that, and if disney does anything they learn, and listen. now two years at the largest resort destination in the united states is a very long time. even if they refurbed everything i doubt it would take more than a year, but jeez, it almost took that long for spaceship earth, so who knows
